Caltagirone

Town in Sicily, 60 km/37 mi southwest of Catania; population (1991) 36,900. It is built on hills 610 m/2,000 ft above sea level, near the source of the Caltagirone River. Caltagirone is a sulphur-mining centre, and is famous for its maiolica (white tin-glazed earthenware) and terracotta work; there is a cathedral.

The town was devastated by an earthquake in 1693.
