Caltanissetta

Town in Sicily, Italy, 96 km/60 mi southeast of Palermo; population (2001) 61,400. It is situated on a high plateau in the middle of the island. Sulphur, potash, and magnesium are mined nearby, and there are mining schools in the town. It has a baroque cathedral (16th–17th centuries), and a ruined castle. The annual Agricultural and Industrial Fair of Central Sicily is held here in May.
