Calumet City

City in Cook County, northeastern Illinois, USA, on the Little Calumet and Grand Calumet rivers and on the Indiana border immediately west of Hammond; population (1990) 37,800. It is an industrial suburb of Chicago 31 km/19 mi southeast of the Loop. A centre for heavy industry, the city grew up around its meat-packing and chemical plants. An oil refinery and steelworks also contribute to the local economy. Over the past few decades, however, Calumet City has become increasingly residential.

Calumet City was originally called West Hammond. Lake Calumet lies 6 km/4 mi to the northwest; the Sand Ridge Nature Center is just to the southwest.
