Calumet City| City in Cook County, northeastern Illinois, USA, on the Little Calumet and Grand Calumet rivers and on the Indiana border immediately west of Hammond; population (1990) 37,800. It is an industrial suburb of Chicago 31 km/19 mi southeast of the Loop. A centre for heavy industry, the city grew up around its meat-packing and chemical plants. An oil refinery and steelworks also contribute to the local economy. Over the past few decades, however, Calumet City has become increasingly residential. |
| Calumet City was originally called West Hammond. Lake Calumet lies 6 km/4 mi to the northwest; the Sand Ridge Nature Center is just to the southwest. |
