Calvatia

Genus of fungi of the order Lycoperdales, in the class Basidiomycetes. They are puffballs; the pestle puffball C. excipuliformis has a rounded head with a tough outer wall on a long, thick stalk. It is common in woods, grows to 15 cm/6 in high and 10 cm/4 in diameter, and is edible when young.
