Calvert, George, 1st Baron Baltimore (1579-1632)

English politician who founded the North American colony of Maryland 1632. As a supporter of colonization, he was granted land in Newfoundland 1622 but, finding the climate too harsh, obtained a royal charter for the more temperate Maryland 1632.

Calvert was born in Yorkshire, England, and educated at Oxford. A confidant of King James I, he served in Parliament and the Privy Council. He became secretary of state, but was forced to resign from that office 1625 because of his conversion to Roman Catholicism.
