Calvert County

County in central Maryland, USA; area 552 sq km/213 sq mi; population (1990) 51,400. It forms a peninsula bounded to the east by Chesapeake Bay and to the south and west by the Patuxent River. Maryland's smallest county, it has 266 km/165 mi of shoreline. Prince Frederick is its seat. Calvert County is a fishing and agricultural area producing crabs, oysters, fish, tobacco, and other crops.

The Calvert Cliffs nuclear plant, in operation since 1974, is near Lusby, in the southeast.
