Calvi

Seaport of northwest Corsica, France, 72 km/45 mi north of Ajaccio, in the département of Haute Corse; population (1993 est) 4,900. The town's main industries are tourism and wine. It was founded in 1268, and was an important Genoese stronghold.

During an English bombardment of Calvi in 1794, in the Revolutionary Wars, Horatio Nelson lost his right eye.

Commended in the AR Awards of 2003 for their extension to a Ligurian cemetery (AR December 2003), Aldo Amoretti and Marco Calvi impressed the jury with another project for a contemporary necropolis.
According to Giulia Calvi, seventeenth-century Tuscan magistrates faced a similar conceptual problem in trying to sort out what to do with fatherless children--maternal love, Calvi argues, was invented in the interactions between women and magistrates as an ideal to counterbalance the legal rights the father's family held to the custody of the child.
