Cam Ranh

Port in South Vietnam; population (2001 est) 161,000. The port has one of the best deepwater harbours in southeast Asia and lies on a peninsula sheltering Cam Ranh Bay, which is part of the South China Sea.

In 1905, during the Russo-Japanese War, Cam Ranh harboured the Russian fleet on its way to meet the Japanese navy at the battle of Tsushima. In the Vietnam War it was a US base. It later became a staging complex for the Soviet Pacific fleet.
