Camagüey

Province of eastern Cuba, in the West Indies, bounded to the north by the Atlantic Ocean, to the west by Ciego de Avila province, and to the east by Las Tunas province; area 15,990 sq km/6,174 sq mi; population (1995 est) 840,000. The sparsely populated province is the largest in Cuba and is mainly agricultural, with flat plains which are used for sugar production, grazing, and cattle-raising, with an estimated million head of cattle in the province. The region is drained by the San Pedro, Najasa, and Caunao rivers. The provincial capital is Camagüey.
