Camagüey

City in Cuba, capital of Camagüey province, 570 km/354 mi southeast of Havana; population (1994 est) 294,000. It is linked by rail and road to Havana in the west and Santiago de Cuba in the east. Industries include the production of chromite, livestock, sugar cane, and other agricultural goods.

Founded in 1514 as Santa María de Puerto Príncipe, Camagüey was the capital of the Spanish West Indies during the 19th century.

It has a 17th-century cathedral, and is home to the University of Camagüey (1975).
