Camargo, Marie-Anne de Cupis de

    0.03 sec.

Camargo, Marie-Anne de Cupis de (1710-1770)

French ballerina. She became a ballet star in Paris in 1726 and was the first ballerina to attain the ‘batterie’ (movements involving beating the legs together) previously danced only by men. She shortened her skirt to expose her ankles and her brilliant footwork, thereby gaining more freedom of movement.
