Cambreling, Sylvain (1948- )

French conductor. He studied at the Paris Conservatory and was principal guest conductor with the Ensemble Intercontemporain 1976-81. He made his Glyndebourne and London (English National Opera Ensemble) debuts in 1981, with Il Barbiere di Siviglia/The Barber of Seville and Louise, and his La Scala debut in 1984, with Lucio Silla. In 1985 he conducted Gounod's Romeo at the New York Metropolitan Opera House, and in 1986 he led Debussy's Le Martyre at Salzburg. He was musical director at Brussels 1981-92, with Lohengrin and Simon Boccanegra, and at the Frankfurt Opera from 1993, with Wozzeck, From the House of the Dead, and Elektra. He conducted The Rake's Progress at Salzburg in 1994.
