Cambridge Bay

Hamlet in Kitikmeot, located in the Canadian territory of Nunavut, southeast of Victoria Island, on Cambridge Bay off Dease Strait, 800 km/500 mi north-northeast of Yellowknife; population (1996 est) 1,400. A tiny Inuit community before the 1940s, it became a navigational and Distant Early Warning line (DEW Line) of radar installations in the 1950s. It is now an administrative centre with a fish packing plant and scientific and government facilities.

Victoria Island is now divided between the Northwest Territories and Nunavut.

Features include part of the Nunavut Arctic College (1984) and an airport.
