This book can be enjoyed by both advanced and novice stargazers, as it includes chapter section titles ranging from "Cassiopeia, Cepheus, Camelopardalis, Lacerta" to "Choosing a Telescope. Relying on the sharp eye of a continentwide array of radio telescopes, astronomers measured the average magnetic field near the surface of the elderly star TX Camelopardalis (TX Cam), which resides 1,000 light-years from Earth. Using ultraviolet radiation from the supergiant star Alpha Camelopardalis like a flashlight from afar, WUPPE researchers found that certain wavelengths of ultraviolet light that pass through interstellar dust have little or no polarization -- a strong indication that the dust absorbs light rather than scatters the radiation, says Arthur D. |
