Cameron, Basil

    0.09 sec.

Cameron, Basil (1884-1975)

English conductor. He studied in Berlin, Germany, 1902-06, and as a conductor in Torquay adopted, but only up to the war, the name Basil Hindenburg in an attempt to negate the usual prejudice against conductors with English names. He was engaged with seaside orchestras 1912-30, then conducted orchestras in San Francisco and Seattle, USA, before returning to the UK in 1938. He assisted Henry Wood, then Adrian Boult, with the Prom Concerts from 1940; in September 1945 he conducted the first European performance of Arnold Schoenberg's piano concerto.
