Cameron County

County 2,347 in extreme southern Texas, USA; area sq km/906 sq mi; population (1990) 260,100. It is bounded to the south by the Rio Grande, across which is the Mexican state of Tamaulipas, and to the east by the Gulf of Mexico. Brownsville, the county seat, and Port Isabel are ocean ports; Harlingen and San Benito are industrial centres. Agricultural products such as livestock, citrus fruits, vegetables, and cotton are important; clay is also mined, and natural gas and oil are produced and refined in the county. Tourism is important because of the county's year-round warm weather, Gulf beaches, and proximity to Mexico.
