Cammarano, Salvatore (1801–1852)

Italian librettist. He wrote various stage pieces before the libretto for Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor in 1835; his other libretti included Roberto Devereux, Belisario, and Poliuto. His first libretto for Giuseppe Verdi was Alzira, in 1841; later ones are La battaglia di Legnano, Luisa Miller, and most of Il trovatore. He also wrote the libretti for Giovanni Pacini's Saffo and Giuseppe Mercadante's La vestale and Medea.
