Camp Verde| Town in Yavapai County, central Arizona, USA, on the Verde River, 56 km/35 mi east of Prescott and 64 km/40 mi south of Flagstaff; population (1990) 6,200. It is mainly a tourist centre. |
| Nearby to the north-northeast is Montezuma Castle National Monument, with a well-preserved, 5-story cliff dwelling, built by the Sinagua in the 12th century; its name reflects the once common belief that Southwestern Pueblos had been built by Mexico's Aztecs. A fort established here in the 1860s (active until 1891) to protect farmers is now a state historic park. |
