Campbell, John Francis (1822-1885)

Scottish folklorist. Indirectly inspired by the Grimm brothers, he organized the collection of a large corpus of ballads and folk tales and published Popular Tales of the West Highlands 1860-62. Under the title More West Highland Tales, further material has been edited by others.

Campbell was born on the Hebridean island of Islay, studied at Edinburgh, and held a number of administrative posts. He corresponded with the ballad collector Francis James Child (1825-1896), and occupies a similar position in his own field.
