Campbell, Sol

    0.01 sec.

Campbell, Sol (1974– )

English footballer. A strong and pacy defender, he first achieved international acclaim with his accomplished displays in the 1998 World Cup. By July 2007 he had won 69 caps since making his full international debut in 1996. Having seen out his contract at Tottenham Hotspur, where he had played for ten years, he moved to their north London rivals Arsenal in July 2001 on a free transfer, where he helped them win the League and FA Cup double in his first season. He was part of the Arsenal team that went through the entire 2003–04 Premier League season unbeaten.

He won his first major trophy in 1999, when Tottenham beat Leicester City 1–0 in the League Cup final at Wembley Stadium. With Arsenal he won two English League titles and two FA Cup winners' medals (though he missed out on another in 2003 due to injury). In the 2006 Champions League final, Campbell opened the scoring against Barcelona but Arsenal went on to lose 2–1. In July 2006, he left Arsenal and signed for Portsmouth. In 2008 he won his third FA Cup winners' medal.
