Attock

City in Punjab province, Pakistan, near Rawalpindi; capital of Attock district; population (1998 est) 70,000. Situated on the left bank of the River Indus, it has strategic importance as the location of the main bridge over the river, and is a commercial centre for this fertile agricultural area that produces wheat, barley, peas, beans, and tobacco. Many invaders of India such as Alexander the Great and Tamerlane have used this route. The city was founded in 1581 by the Emperor Akbar.

Under British rule, it was known as Campbellpore.
