Campbellton

City in northern New Brunswick, Canada, at the head of ocean navigation on the Restigouche River, off Chaleur Bay, at the Québec border; seat of Restigouche County; population (1991) 8,700. It is largely a tourist centre, servicing the Restigouche's salmon fishery.

Campbellton was settled by Acadians (former inhabitants of Nova Scotia) in the 1750s, then by Scots in the 1820s, when it was a shipbuilding and fishing centre. Lumber became important later in the century, and pulp in the 1920s. The Sugarloaf (300 m/984 ft) dominates the city.
