Campi Flegrei

Volcanic district near Naples, Italy, extending about 15 km/9 mi west from the Vomero suburbs to Cuma and Miseno, forming the north side of the Bay of Naples. The district's productive soils are a result of volcanic activity from several craters, including Lake Avernus (Lago d'Averno), Solfatara, Agnano, and the most recent Monte Nuovo, an ash cone thrown up on 29 September 1538. The Camaldoli monastery is situated at the highest point (458 m/1,502 ft), with a commanding view across the Bay of Naples to Vesuvius.
