Campus Martius

Large level space outside the city walls on the northwestern side of ancient Rome. It had an altar to Mars, the Roman god of war, and was used for military manoeuvres and contests. During the later period of the republic it became a public recreation ground and was laid out to include walks and public baths, theatres, and porticos.
