Camrose

City in Alberta, Canada, on Camrose Creek and Mirror Lake, 110 km/68 mi southeast of Edmonton; population (1996 est) 13,700. It is the distribution, industrial, and administrative centre of an agricultural and coal and oil producing region. Grain, flour, and meat are processed in the city. Camrose became a city in 1955.

The Norwegian settler Ole Bakken was the first European to settle in the area. The settlement did not grow properly until after 1900, when the nearby railway opened up the area and the town was founded formally in 1905 by a Belgian missionary. It was named after Camrose in Pembrokeshire, Wales, in 1906 having originally been named Stoney Creek, and, in 1905, Sparling. Oil was found in the region in 1950 and oil wells have been developed in the area. The city is served by both the Canadian National Railways and the Canadian Pacific Railway.

It is home to Augustana University College and Camrose Lutheran College. One of the country's first ski clubs was founded in the city in 1911.
