Can Tho

City in southern Vietnam and capital of Hau Giang province, lying 145 km/90 mi southwest of Ho Chi Minh City; population (2000 est) 244,100. A busy river port situated 70 km/43 mi from the sea on western arm of the Mekong River, it is the largest city of the Mekong delta. It is a major rice-growing area, and its industries now include the manufacture of fertilisers, plastics and bricks, as well as the older industries of rice milling and coconut-oil extraction. Tourism is also important.

As well as river port facilities, the city has two airports, a university (1966), and an agricultural and teacher-training college (1976).
