Canajoharie

Canajoharie

Town in Canajoharie township, Montgomery County, eastern New York, USA, on the Mohawk River and the New York State Barge Canal, 23 km/14 mi southwest of Johnstown; population (1990) 2,300. Its light industries include food processing.

Its Iroquoian name means ‘washing pot’, a reference to a large pothole in Canajoharie Creek Gorge. It was settled c.1730 by Dutch and German farmers, and its Fort Rensselaer was a troop-gathering spot during the War of Independence.
