Cancún

Resort in Yucatan, Mexico, created on a barrier island 1974 by the Mexican government to boost tourism; population around 30,000 (almost all involved in the tourist industry). It is Mexico's most popular tourist destination, with beaches, a coral reef, and a lagoon. The hotel zone is on the sandbar, and the workers live in Cancún city on the mainland.

In 1981, a North–South summit was held here to discuss the widening gap between the industrialized countries and the developing world.
