Candler, Asa (Griggs) (1851-1929)

US manufacturer. In 1887 he bought sole rights to John S Pemberton's original formula for Coca-Cola and formed the Coca-Cola Company in 1890. Marketing and manufacturing the soft drink until 1919, he sold the company after a long federal suit over how healthy Coca-Cola was.

He was born in Carroll County, Georgia. He left the family farm to become a doctor in Atlanta, but switched to pharmacy in 1873. He invested heavily in real estate, and as a public-spirited citizen he now served as Mayor of Atlanta. He also became a major donor to many causes and institutions; his gifts to Atlanta's Emory University included funding of a teaching hospital for its medical school.
