Canelones

Capital of the department of the same name in Uruguay, 45 km/28 mi north of Montevideo; population (1996) 18,316. Canelones is a trading centre for the surrounding grain-growing district, and was formerly known as Guadalupe.

Department in southern Uruguay, a lowland area at the mouth of the Río de la Plata (River Plate) just north of Montevideo; area 4,511 sq km/1,742 sq mi; population (1996) 443,600. The region is comprised mostly of lowlands with fine beaches along its coast. It is the second most heavily populated department of the country. The area's economy is based on cattle-ranching and on agricultural products such as fruit, wine, and olives. In the centre of the department is the F D Roosevelt national park.
