Canindiyu

Department in the Oriental region of east-central Paraguay, bordered to the north along the Cordillera Mbaracayú and the east along the River Paraná by Brazil; area 14,667 sq km/5,667 sq mi; population (1992) 103,800. The capital is Salto del Guairá.

Together with the department of Alto Paraná, Canindiyu is one of the chief areas of rural settlement in Paraguay. The population includes not only Paraguayans and Brazilians, but also many Germans and Japanese who settled here in agricultural colonies during the twentieth century.
