Canning, George (1770–1827)![]() George Canning, British Tory politician and prime minister for four months during 1827. He resigned as foreign secretary in 1809 after blaming his colleague Viscount Castlereagh, Secretary of War, for two British defeats. The two men fought a duel on Wimbledon Common to settle the matter, during which Canning was wounded in the thigh. British Tory politician, foreign secretary 1807–10 and 1822–27, and prime minister in 1827 in coalition with the Whigs. He was largely responsible, during the Napoleonic Wars, for the seizure of the Danish fleet and British intervention in the Spanish peninsula. How to thank TFD for its existence?
