Cannon, Philip (1929– )

English composer. He studied with Imogen Holst and later at the Royal College of Music, London, with Gordon Jacob (composition) and Pierre Tas (violin). This was followed by some study with Paul Hindemith. After a period of lecturing at Sydney University, Australia, he returned to the Royal College of Music in 1952.

Works

three operas; string quartet (1964) and other chamber music, vocal and choral music including Lord of Light, oratorio for soloists, chorus, and orchestra (1980), piano compositions; two symphonies, including Son of Man, for the UK's entry to the European Community.
