Canso Strait

Channel between Nova Scotia and Cape Breton Island, eastern Canada, 27 km/17 mi long and 4 km/2.5 mi wide. A causeway 1,375 m/1,504 yd long and 25 m/27 yd wide links Cape Breton Island to the mainland by road and railway. The Canso Canal allows shipping to pass through the causeway. Port Hawkesbury at the eastern end of the strait has a pulp and paper mill, a large oil refinery, making use of the deep-water access for supertankers, a thermal power station, and a heavy-water plant.
