CantabriaAutonomous community and province of northern Spain; area 5,289 sq km/2,042 sq mi; population (2001 est) 537,600. From the coastline on the Bay of Biscay it rises to the Cantabrian Mountains. There is some mining (iron, zinc, and some lead) here, as well as engineering and food industries, particularly dairy products. Along the coast, chief occupations are fishing, fish-processing, and ship-building. The capital is Santander; other chief towns are Reinosa, Torrelavega, Castro Urdiales, and Santoña. Cantabria
