Cantata on the Death of the Emperor Joseph II

    0.01 sec.

Cantata on the Death of the Emperor Joseph II

Work by Beethoven for soloists, chorus, and orchestra (text by S A Averdonk). It was commissioned from Beethoven in Bonn, Germany, after the death of the emperor on 20 February 1790, but was not performed until 1884. The manuscript was probably seen by Haydn on his return from his first visit to England, and led to his offering Beethoven lessons in Vienna, Austria. The cantata contains an anticipation of a theme from the last scene of Beethoven's opera Fidelio.
