Canteloube (de Malaret), (Marie) Joseph (1879-1957)

French composer. In 1900 he began to collect and study French folk song, particularly of the Auvergne region, of which he published several collections. He is best known for his four volumes of folk-song arrangements Chants d'Auvergne (1923-30).

He studied with Vincent d'Indy at the Schola Cantorum in Paris, and lectured on French music and folk song from 1923.

Orchestral

symphonic poems Vers la princesse lointaine and Lauriers; Pièces françaises for piano and orchestra; Poème for violin and orchestra.

Chamber

Dans la montagne for violin and piano.

Vocal

songs with orchestra and with piano; many folk-song arrangements.
