Canvey Island| Island in the Thames estuary, England, 48 km/30 mi east of London; area 18 sq km/7 sq mi; population (2001) 37,500. It is situated off the Essex coast to the west of Southend, and was reclaimed from the sea in the 17th century. Canvey Island is reached from Benfleet Station, with which it is connected by a bridge. A major oil storage terminal is located here and the island is popular for water sports and fishing. |
| In 1953 the island was damaged by a flood, which killed 58 people. The Thames Barrier was built in 1982 to alleviate the river's flooding problems. |
| The Dutch Cottage Museum on Canvey Island is a 17th-century cottage with annexe, built by one of the workmen of Dutch-born British engineer Vermuyden, and houses a small museum of local history. |
