Cao Bang

Province of northern Vietnam, close to the Chinese frontier; area 8,445 sq km/3,260 sq mi; population (1993) 624,700. The capital is Cao Bang. The region is mountainous and forested; tin, wolfram, gold, and iron are mined. The Be Be National Park is located in the province.

The inhabitants of Cao Bang include Tho, Nung, Man, Meo, and Vietnamese. The French loss of Cao Bang town in 1950 was a turning-point in the Indochina War of 1946-54.
