Cap-Rouge

    0.04 sec.

Cap-Rouge

City in the Québec Urban Community, southern Québec, Canada, on the northern shore of the St Lawrence River, at the mouth of the River du Cap-Rouge, 11 km/7 mi southwest of downtown Québec City; population (1991) 14,100. Since the 1950s Cap-Rouge has become a residential and commercial suburb of Québec City.

It was here, in 1541, that Jacques Cartier attempted to establish the colony of Charlesbourg-Royal; the local quartz deposits, mistakenly thought to be diamonds, were a major factor. Cap-Rouge is located at the southwestern end of Québec City's Cap-Diamant.
