Brown, Capability (Lancelot) (1716–1783)English landscape gardener and architect. He acquired his nickname because of his continual enthusiasm for the ‘capabilities’ of natural landscapes. He worked on or improved the gardens of many great houses and estates, including Hampton Court; Kew; Blenheim, Oxfordshire; Stowe, Buckinghamshire; and Petworth, West Sussex, occasionally contributing to the architectural designs.

| A century later, two neighbouring estates were amalgamated, bringing together landscapes and buildings by Capability Brown and William Chambers, creating a marvel of vistas and architecture which was eventually made over to the nation in 1841--not least to formalise the botany research undertaken there. The final section is devoted to the emergence and development of the English landscape movement, involving the likes of Roger Morris, Burlington, Colen Campbell, Kent, Bridge-man, Capability Brown and Chambers, as illustrated by a number of significant stately homes and parks concentrated in the same small area. In this direction, only the tropical heat and humidity (and the towers of another New Town) remind you that Capability Brown was not at work. |
