Cape Bojador

Headland of Western Sahara, in northwest Africa, 160 km/100 mi southwest of El Aaiún. It was rounded by Portuguese navigators in 1434.

On 28 August 1815 the US brig Commerce was dashed against Mauritania's Cape Bojador and lost, although through bravery and quick thinking the ship's captain, James Riley, managed to lead all of his crew to safety.
The fifth centenary of the passage of Cape Bojador in 1934 did not interest the government and therefore passed almost unnoticed.
Russell has a thorough discussion of the importance of passing Cape Bojador in West Africa in 1434 and concludes that counting the voyage of Pedro de Sintra, started before Henry's death, 2000 miles of the West African coast were covered through Henry's efforts.
