Cape Fear River

River flowing through eastern North Carolina, USA, and entering the Atlantic at Cape Fear; length 320 km/200 mi. It is formed by the confluence of the Deep and Haw rivers in Chatham County. Flooding has occurred in its lower reaches.

Course

From the confluence, it winds generally south to Fayetteville, its head of navigation. It continues southeast through the Coastal Plain to its estuary at Wilmington, where several other swampy lowland rivers join it. Fort Fisher stands 11 km/7 mi north-northeast of where the river enters the Atlantic.

It was an important early shipping route for lumber, naval stores, and agricultural produce.
