Cape mountain zebra

Zebra subspecies Equus zebra zebra, confined to South Africa. It almost became extinct in the 1940s, and in 1993 had a population of only 450, despite attempts at conservation. The main population is in Mountain Zebra Park in the east of the country, although some zebras have been moved to other parks in an attempt to build up other viable breeding herds.
