Cape St Vincent, Battle of

During the French Revolutionary Wars, British defeat of a Spanish fleet 14 February 1797 off Cape St Vincent on the Portuguese coast; the British victory wrecked French plans to invade England. The two British commanders were both honoured for this crucial victory: John Jervis became Lord St Vincent and Horatio Nelson gained his knighthood.
