Cape York

Peninsula, the northernmost point (10° 41' S) of the Australian mainland, named by English explorer Captain James Cook in 1770. The peninsula is about 800 km/500 mi long and 640 km/400 mi wide at its junction with the mainland. Its barrenness deterred early Dutch explorers, although the south is being developed for cattle (Brahmin type). In the north there are large bauxite deposits.
