Capitola

City in Santa Cruz County, west-central California, USA, on the northern shore of Monterey Bay, 8 km/5 mi east of Santa Cruz; population (1990) 10,200. Established in the 1850s as Soquel Landing, flower growing (especially begonias) is important in this old seaside resort.

ON A MONDAY afternoon in June 1999, Richard Quigley was riding his Harley near Capitola, California, when a local police officer pulled him over for violating the state's helmet law.
Researchers now suspect that a 1961 incident in Capitola, California, in which nonviolent seabirds attacked people and dive-bombed windows (later inspiring the Alfred Hitchcock thriller The Birds) was caused when the birds ate fish tainted with domoic acid.
Though Macy's won't open a store here this year, Jean Coggan, a company spokeswoman, said the Cincinnati-based retailer has plans for four new stores in the West, including Temecula, Capitola near Santa Cruz, Westminster and Scottsdale, Ariz.
