Caplet, André (1878–1925)

French conductor and composer. He was much influenced by Debussy, who allowed him to orchestrate a part of Le Martyre de Saint Sebastien, which Caplet premiered in 1911.

Works

Orchestral

symphonic study Le Masque de la mort rouge (after Poe, 1909); Epiphanie for cello and orchestra (1923). He orchestrated Debussy's Children's Corner and conducted the first performance of Le Martyre de Saint Sébastien (1911).

Chamber

Suite persane for ten wind instruments; Conte fantastique (after Poe) for harp and string quartet (an arrangement of Le Masque de la mort rouge); Sonata de chiesa for violin and organ; children's suite for piano duet.

Vocal

Mass for unaccompanied voices; Le Miroir de Jésus for voices, string quintet, and harp (1924); Le Pie Jésus for voice and organ; song cycles Prières, La Croix douloureuse, Trois Fables de La Fontaine, Cinq Ballades françaises.
