We see the Italian general Luigi Cadorna, whose disastrous character and judgment helped sink the Italians at Caporetto, and who "even adopted the Roman practice of decimation, shooting every tenth man at random in a regiment that had done badly," including a father of seven for being last man in formation because he had overslept.
An Italian scholar's perspective on the depiction of the retreat from Caporetto, or an Eastern critic's reaction to Hemingway's depiction of wartime propaganda, for example, would enhance these entirely American views.
We stayed at the modernised Hotel Hvala in the pretty central square, which was described by Ernest Hemingway in his 1929 semi-autobiographical war novel 'A Farewell to Arm's, although he used the town's Italian name of Caporetto.
